What's a pedestrian to do?

"Coupled with the fact that 95 percent of vehicles observed during the study period did not yield to pedestrians"

This quote from the article linked below is very disturbing. While the quote is about NYC I don't think you would find much better behavior here in Baltimore especially since Baltimore kills pedestrians at twice the rate they do in NYC.

$1,050 fine for... get this, for causing drivers to slow down and going too fast on a bicycle

If I am reading the story right a cyclist tried to cross a busy roadway at an intersection during rush hour, I assume no traffic light or crosswalk was installed to allow a cyclists safe and legal passage across this intersection so the lack of accommodations for cyclists turns a victim into a criminal, just for trying to cross a road. I only wish I could get a $1,000 every time some idiot pulled in front me causing me to slow down.

Note: I just posted a new link to a video in which the cyclist says the police accused him of going too fast. Things do not make much sense in this story.

2007 NYC Street Memorial Ride & Walk

On Sunday, January 6th, over two hundred people gathered to remember New Yorkers who were killed while biking and walking. The Street Memorial Project lead the 3rd Annual Memorial Ride & Pedestrian Memorial Walk to honor those killed. In 2007, 23 bicyclists and over 100 pedestrians died on NYC streets.

To Contrast that with Baltimore City with a population 1/13 of that of NYC we had 16 (NYC 8) pedestrians killed and one (NYC 2) cyclists killed.
(Numbers in parenthesis are what NYC would be for the same size population as Baltimore (fractions rounded up.))
Also note that bicycle and pedestrian traffic fatalities compose 39% of Baltimore's traffic fatalities.

Do you know your manditory use bike lanes?

Figure 1 Sample Bike Lane. Figure 2. Sample Bike Route w/small shoulder.
Did you know that one of the lanes pictured above is a NOT a mandatory use bike lane for us in Maryland? This article from AZ covers many of the issues that we face here in Maryland over the confusion with extra width that is not defined.

There seems to be a rash of confusion amongst the general public -- both motorists and cyclists -- about what constitutes a bike lane. Adding to the confusion, is the term Bike Route, and compounding all of that is penchant by all most all Maryland DOTs to paint a solid white stripe enclosing whatever space is left over between the right hand travel lane and the gutter.

Ped Safety Training in conjunction with New Partners Conference

Ped Safety Training is being held in conjunction with the New Partners Conference in DC in February. The training is described below. People can sign up for just the training if they don't want to attend the conference.

Designing for Pedestrian Safety
Tuesday, February 5th - 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Wednesday, February 6th - 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

This 2-day course was developed for the Federal Highway Administration to help states and cities that are dealing with a higher than average rate of pedestrian crashes. The course is taught by some of the nation's experts in planning and designing "complete streets" and is aimed at a broad audience including traffic engineers, transportation planners and pedestrian advocates with a basic knowledge of the issues. The course provides detailed discussion of how to design streets, sidewalks, crossings, intersections, transit stops, freeway interchanges, and roundabouts to accommodate pedestrians. It also includes a module on road diets and how they can be used to help pedestrians. The second day of the course includes a field exercise in which students apply what they have learned to an actual set of streets and intersections.
