Logo for Baltimore Spokes

You might have noticed the Geeklog logo in the top left hand corner and wondered what it is all about? Geeklog is the software we use for running the site and the logo is default logo that comes with it. I am not a graphics artist and have almost zero drawing skills so I am putting the call out to our readers to come up with a logo for the site. Send submissions into info at baltimorespokes.org

Baltimore City Bike Racks

A question came in to our mailbox from Elizabeth asking for help figuring out who in the city can help get a bike rack installed. She was looking for a bike rack to be installed on the sidewalk outside the new developments on teh east side of the 3200 block of Saint Paul Street. If that is not possible then on the west side of the street by the new condos that are being built.

My initial thought was to contact Carley Francis at Baltimore City, but she has moved on. Beth Strommen said the Bike coordinator is in charge of bike racks but the position hasn't been filled yet.

So who in the Baltimore City Government can we contact about bike rack issues?

The MTA and bikes

Just to let everyone know I had a very serious near miss with MTA Mobility car while riding my bike and I just wrote the manager of MTA Customer Service a fairly strong letter. I am also curious what others think about MTA drivers and their curtsey around cyclists.

Cyclists like push for safety in bill

CRITICS SAY PROPOSED BUFFER WILL PUT DRIVERS IN HARM'S WAY
By Edwin Garcia - MediaNews Sacramento Bureau

...
``It says if a driver passes you close, and there's a police car nearby, they can pull them over,'' said d'Souza, who rides 70 miles a week and advises the city of San Jose on bicycle issues for the task force studying development in Coyote Valley. ``It's a step in the right direction.''

The measure is gaining traction among serious cyclists and also parents whose children ride bikes to school. Still, it faces an uphill climb from the same forces that helped defeat Nava's similar bill last year.
...
Critics' concerns

Opponents, including the Teamsters Union, worry that drivers forced to swerve around cyclists would place themselves on a collision course with oncoming traffic, especially on narrow roads.

The City That Never Walks

By ROBERT SULLIVAN - The New York Times

FOR the past two decades, New York has been an inspiration to other American cities looking to revive themselves. Yes, New York had a lot of crime, but somehow it also still had neighborhoods, and a core that had never been completely abandoned to the car. Lately, though, as far as pedestrian issues go, New York is acting more like the rest of America, and the rest of America is acting more like the once-inspiring New York.
...

And yet, here in New York, we even have the debate over bicycle traffic backwards. We focus on drivers

Help stop global warming now

From Environment Maryland:

With scientific evidence pouring in, even President Bush last week acknowledged the dangers of global warming in the State of the Union address. The facts are that we need to take action now to prevent the worst effects of global warming: New Orleans-like flooding of coastal cities, chronic drought caused by declining rainfall, and more and more destructive hurricanes.

Global warming is the challenge of our generation, and we owe it to future generations to take action. Your representative has the opportunity to do just that by cosponsoring the Safe Climate Act, a science-based measure that would reduce global warming pollution by 80% over the next half century.

Please sign our Stopping Global Warming Pollution petition, which urges your representative to tackle global warming by cosponsoring the Safe Climate Act. Then, ask your friends and family to help by forwarding this email on to them.

Charge your cellphone while biking to work

If you bike long enough you might be able to charge you cell phone while traveling to work. Motorola showed off a docking station that uses an old school dynomo to charge a phone.
