O'Malley one of The 2009 Public Officials of the Year

...this is a time for focus. Because now, more than ever, the key question facing government officials is not what they want to do. It's what they have to do. What is really important to the health, safety and welfare of citizens? Yet even as they trim their ambitions, states and localities can still strive to make government work better. As Jay Williams, the mayor of Youngstown, Ohio, puts it, a leaner future can be a healthy one, too.

...Some, like Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, are numbers-driven seekers of efficiency. ...

So the question before us are we going to see more attention to cycling projects? At least it sounds like we got a good sound bite to make the case.

Obama on a bicycle ride in Martha's Vineyard

image
Here we have a wonderful picture of a father spending time with his kids and the press gets its knickers all in a knot about the President not wearing a helmet. Gee if it's that big of a deal maybe we should start bombing those helmet-less Danes, seriously we should not let them get away with have a lower bicycle fatality rate then us without helmets, safe cycling just can't be done without a helmet and we need to let the world know that. If bike riding without a helmet is such a high risk activity maybe we should crack down on other activities that have higher risks like walking, far more people get killed walking then they do by bike riding, we should definitely make pedestrians wear helmets. And then how about sheer numbers of lives we can save if we require motorists to wear helmets out of 40,000 motor vehicle deaths a year you would think that we could save a few thousand lives if we made motorists wear helmets, if they are going to run around like race car drivers they might as well dress the part.

Or maybe we should just say, aww what nice dad spending time with his kids, too bad more parents don't do this with their kids... maybe because they are afraid to leave the house without a helmet.

End-of-Session Wrap-Up

Cardin Annapolis Reports

Delegate Jon S. Cardin  District 11, Baltimore County

April 15, 2009
Dear Friend:

The 426th session of the Maryland General Assembly drew to a close Monday night, and I again thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you.  I have been honored to serve the 11th District with my teammates Bobby Zirkin, Dan Morhaim and Dana Stein.  In a dire fiscal situation, we have worked hard to reflect your priorities. To that end, this letter is designed to give a modest synopsis of some of my 2009 accomplishments and a personal perspective on the legislative session at-large.

"The person who is waiting for something to turn up might start with their shirt sleeves." - Garth Henrichs
...
Regrettably, in this economic climate it was difficult to reach an agreement on one of my priorities -- voluntary public campaign finance. The program gained real momentum when Senate President Mike Miller came out in support of the measure. Another bill that gained significant momentum was my bicycle safety bill which calls for cars to maintain a three-foot buffer when passing cyclists or pedestrians. This bill passed overwhelmingly in the Senate, but stalled in the House Environmental Matters Committee. Both of these important measures attracted a great deal of media attention, and I look forward to working towards their success next session.

Week 12 Annapolis Report (4/3/09)

Cardin Annapolis Reports

Delegate Jon S. Cardin  \ District 11, Baltimore County

Week 12 Annapolis Report (4/3/09)
I was pleased to see so many people from the 11th District at the Baltimore County Democratic Unity Night on Monday. It was an honor to have Governor Martin O\'Malley, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and County Executive Jim Smith speak to Baltimore County residents about the importance of our county in the State of Maryland. They shared with us the good news that federal and state dollars will be flowing into Baltimore County as a result of the federal stimulus package, the efforts of your elected officials on your behalf, and the lobbying of people like you. Thank you to the Baltimore County Democratic State Central Committee to putting together this open forum.

Please join me, and the other members of the 11th District team, on Thursday, May 14, at the Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Station located at 10401 Owings Mills Blvd. This will be a wonderful opportunity to speak directly to the people we represent and share with you our successes and experiences during this Maryland General Assembly session. Thank you to the Northwest Baltimore County Democratic Club and the NDC - Northwest Democratic Club for organizing this event.

Please remember to reference my website, www.JonCardin.com. It contains helpful information including my views on important issues, the application for the Cardin Honors Scholarship, the weekly Annapolis Reports and press releases of interest to my constituents.
