With more bicyclists on the road and a 3-foot passing law wending its way--again--through the state legislature, there is hope bicycling safety might enter public consciousness. Lately, we noticed bicycle safety posters on city buses, ironically enough, as bus drivers, along with their commercial counterparts, make for a frightening city bike ride. No matter, we continue to pedal to work and around town. We'll have to drive to Westminster, however, to meet fellow biking enthusiasts at the annual bike expo, which is to cyclists what Carlisle is to automotive enthusiasts: booth after booth of folks selling used parts, looking to swap rides, industry reps, and shops and vendors offering seminars, tutorials, remaindered parts, and stuff, lots of stuff. If you've thought of buying a bike, improving on what you have, learning about the sport, or want to just walk around and chat with fellow bike nuts, this is the place to be.

The Stop, Swap and Save Bicycle swap is scheduled for this Sunday, Feb 14 in Westminster, Maryland.   I attended last year and posted a review with photographs.  The Swap is a great opportunity to pick up a used bicycle as well as new merchandise.  This is the 13th year for the Swap and it will be the largest one yet.  There has been a significant amount of snow in the Washington DC area this week but the Swap is still scheduled to take place this weekend.   The following update on the weather has been put on their website.  “We’re hard at work making sure that this year’s Westminster, MD SWAP is our biggest and best SWAP yet despite recent weather related challenges. As a result, we currently have no plans to postpone, cancel or otherwise reschedule this event. We’re taking steps to maximize available parking and conditions at the venue as well as considering off site parking options along with shuttle service if needed. However, to make the most of what may be limited parking we are requesting that consumers help by carpooling to this year’s event as much as possible. In the event of additional precipitation within 24 hours of the SWAP, please check our web site for updates”

Like most people I live a hectic life and who has the time for much exercise? Thanks to xtracycle now I do. By using my bike for daily activities I can get things done and get an hour plus work out in 15 minutes extra of my time, not a bad deal and beats taking the extra time going to the gym. In case you are still having trouble being motivated; the National Center of Disease Control says that inactivity is the #2 killer in the United States just behind smoking. ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/bb_nutrition/ ) Get out there and start living life! I can carry home a full shopping cart of groceries, car pool two kids or just get lost in the great outdoors camping for a week. Well I got go, another outing this weekend.
