Loch Raven Night Riders Beware

Passing this along as a PSA to those who ride the trails at Loch Raven after dark.

It has been reported that the Park Police snagged 6 to 10 riders on the Providence Rd singletrack climb off of the fireroad from the Seminary loop. This happened on Wed night. They were halfway down the climb when they surprised the night riders between 7P and 730P. All riders were given tickets ($100) and were required to ride the road to where ever they parked their car.

Spread the word not to night ride in those areas.

Like most people I live a hectic life and who has the time for much exercise? Thanks to xtracycle now I do. By using my bike for daily activities I can get things done and get an hour plus work out in 15 minutes extra of my time, not a bad deal and beats taking the extra time going to the gym. In case you are still having trouble being motivated; the National Center of Disease Control says that inactivity is the #2 killer in the United States just behind smoking. ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/bb_nutrition/ ) Get out there and start living life! I can carry home a full shopping cart of groceries, car pool two kids or just get lost in the great outdoors camping for a week. Well I got go, another outing this weekend.

A shame. Generally speaking the mtn bikers that ride at LR are great stewards of the watershed. These tax paying citizens--State, City and/or County--do regular maintenance on the trail, don't litter, and otherwise keep the area vibrant in a way that likely discourages crime or other unsavory behavior that would pose greater risks to the community. All they're trying to do is get some good old fashioned healthy exercise. With all the other bad stuff going on you'd think the Park police would have other things to focus on.
Watershed property is closed to the public at dusk. They were trespassing.
We overlook a lot of laws that are on the books. Night riding has been going on for years at LR and there has never been any harm done. Refer to my previous post, night riding likely discourages other bad behavior in the area.
Homeland Security grant money at work. They have to report it has been spent on increased enforcement, and now they can. Pity.
Patapsco State Park operates under the same dusk to dawn law (aka trespassing) yet they allow mtn bikers, looking for healthy evening recreation after working all day, to ride at night. Specific day/time of the week and only requirement is a lead rider, first aid certified rider and sweep rider. That's too simple a solution for the Reservoir cops responsible for LR since they're paid by the City (with, as you suggest, Homeland Security grant money) so now have to justify their existence. Sure there is nothing going on the City itself that warrants any more serious attention at night. If there had been a serious problem with night riding in the past I could understand but that hasn't been the case. This is BS.
Next time don't stop. I doubt they could catch you on their Huffy's, probably not in shape eaither. Make them work for that ticket... Kinda like an easy ticket, they probably noticed people riding back there and figured its an easy way to make there quota.. But honestly I run back there, and there is a TON of trash, bikers, runners, and stoners please don't litter.. If possible carry some of the crap out of there, we all use it so lets take care of it..
Rode at Loch Raven today. Was told by some other riders that Reservoir police are giving warnings for riding on singletrack during daytime. Fines next. A shame.
