Stronger ban on texting and driving takes effect Sat

from Maryland Politics by Annie Linskey

Glancing at a text message or an email from behind the wheel will cost $500 in fines starting Saturday when a new law goes into effect clarifying Maryland’s muddled driving-while-texting rules.

Maryland drivers also aren’t supposed to talk on their cell phones per a year-old law, but doing so is remains a “secondary offense” meaning police can only pull over a driver who is also breaking another rule.

Drivers will still be able to use GPS systems on their phone while driving, or text an emergency operator.

Like most people I live a hectic life and who has the time for much exercise? Thanks to xtracycle now I do. By using my bike for daily activities I can get things done and get an hour plus work out in 15 minutes extra of my time, not a bad deal and beats taking the extra time going to the gym. In case you are still having trouble being motivated; the National Center of Disease Control says that inactivity is the #2 killer in the United States just behind smoking. ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/bb_nutrition/ ) Get out there and start living life! I can carry home a full shopping cart of groceries, car pool two kids or just get lost in the great outdoors camping for a week. Well I got go, another outing this weekend.

I believe, officially, the "3-foot law" goes into effect and the "manslaughter by vehicle or vessel" as well.
Our 3 foot law went into effect last year at this time but you are correct the Manslaughter by vehicle or vessel went into effect.

A blast from the past when MVA was publishing the "poor" summary of our 3' law as outlined here:

Just one of of many things Baltimore Spokes has championed to correct.
One of my friends who sells BMW parts had a bad experience with a young driver who was texting while driving. His car was hit from behind and he was quite scared because his car was parked. Imagine that. I think that this ban is something very clever because some people need to be fined in order to understand that is dangerous to do that.
