Maryland Strategic Highway Safety Plan - Make Walking and crossing Streets Safer

Pedestrian fatalities comprise about 20 percent of all traffic deaths in Maryland. [Baltimore Spokes: National average 13%.] Over 2,500 pedestrians are injured annually, more then one-third of which occur in Baltimore City and more then another one-third of which occur in Baltimore, Montgomery, and Prince George's Counties. Pedestrians 15 years of age or younger are particularly vulnerable to being injured -- over 30 percent of injured pedestrians are in this age group. [Baltimore Spokes: This age group comprises 13% of the population.] http://www.marylandroads.com/safety/oots/SHSP.pdf;

Like most people I live a hectic life and who has the time for much exercise? Thanks to xtracycle now I do. By using my bike for daily activities I can get things done and get an hour plus work out in 15 minutes extra of my time, not a bad deal and beats taking the extra time going to the gym. In case you are still having trouble being motivated; the National Center of Disease Control says that inactivity is the #2 killer in the United States just behind smoking. ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/bb_nutrition/ ) Get out there and start living life! I can carry home a full shopping cart of groceries, car pool two kids or just get lost in the great outdoors camping for a week. Well I got go, another outing this weekend.

Let me preface my comment by saying that I have been hit by a car, I was in a crosswalk, had the signal to cross, still got nailed, the people never stopped to see if I was allright. This was on Main st. in Ellicott City. I have alot of sympathy for pedestrians, I walk in the city alot, but in Baltimore it's every man for himself. People seem to prefer the street even when the sidewalk is an option, even on busy roads like Hillen Rd. But certain areas are worse than others, like 25th at Greenmount, pretty much all along Greenmount, 33rd st., Maryland ave near North Ave. all of Paca St, oh and around Lexington Mkt is the worst. The other problem is that all of the high traffic commuting routes for cars go right through high pedestrian traffic areas. So you get people speeding, trying to get home, and people trying to cut through the speeding cars to cross the street. The other day at 33rd and Loch Raven I saw an MTA Mobility bus barge its way through a crosswalk full of school kids that had to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit. The driver evidently didnt feel like waiting for the car infront of him to turn left, so they passed the left turning car(which was stopped because of the pedestrians) on the cars right side, and turned left nearly running over the kids crossing Loch Raven. Also take Harford Rd as an example, the speeds through the shopping area of Harford Rd get up to 45mph at certain times of the day, the flow of traffic is relentless, so to cross the street you have to run and dodge. Oddly though I never ever ever puch the button to cross at the crosswalk, and I am admittedly a jaywalker, It's this city! It's in our DNA!
