Just roads everywhere

[B' Spokes: I thought this was kinda cool campaign for a governor.]
********************************************
By Randy LoBasso, Pphiladelphia Weekly

Paul Glover wants to warn us: “In 60 years, either cars will be gone or we will.” Those are tough words. The Germantown resident says he hasn’t driven an automobile since 1978—and, based on a lifetime of research, he’s pretty sure that if more people don’t follow his lead, we’re all doomed. And before you ask: No, he’s not interested in cleaner fuel, or hybrid technology, or electric cars. He believes human mobility will be the end of humanity, because as long as fuel exists, and is cheap, human beings will continue to sprawl—and devour the earth.

“Even if you had a car which ran on parakeet farts and only needed one little parakeet fart a year, cars go everywhere,” he says. “There needs to be a deliberate restraint on human mobility. Otherwise, we entirely cover the planet with roads. Just roads everywhere.”

But who cares what this guy thinks? You should. Glover, a former Temple professor and leader of numerous green job and food organizations around Philadelphia, is running for governor of Pennsylvania on the Green Party ticket.

Vote for Wes Adams for States Attorney

Via Jerry Cunningham, Facebook

Hi friends,

People have asked me what they can do for me and the kids since Trish was killed last August. I've never really had an answer, but now I do.

Please get out and vote for Wes Adams for States Attorney, in the primary on June 24th.

I guess I am guilty of not really getting involved in politics until it affected me. Maybe I didn't get involved because I was so happy living my life with Trish and the kids every day.

But I can't let Trish's memory just fade away. She was a beautiful person taken from this planet for no good reason. I can't have Trish back, but I really don't want this to happen to somebody else. I really don't. And it will happen again unless we raise public awareness about bicycle safety.

It is absolutely unbelievable to me that Wes Adams' opponent is defending Trish's killer.

The people of Anne Arundel county deserve better. Wes Adams is better. Please vote for him. Please like and share his facebook page. Please share his website. You don't have to live in Anne Arundel County to do this.

https://www.facebook.com/wes.adams.98229;
https://www.electwesadams.com/;

Please help raise awareness for bike safety, here in Anne Arundel County and across the country. Because more cyclists will die. More of them will die because it is not treated as a serious crime.

Right now - think of the person that you love the most in this world.

Right now - think of their face and how it feels to hold their hand.

Now imagine that you will never get to talk to them again.

Vote for Wes, because he actually cares about more than himself.

Thank you very much,

Jerry

Brian Frosh for Maryland Attorney General - Washington Post

Brian Frosh for Maryland attorney general - Washington Post

ON THE merits, the three-way race in the Democratic primary for attorney general in Maryland is a slam-dunk. State Sen. Brian E. Frosh of Montgomery County, who is among the most admired, intelligent, civil and hardworking lawmakers in Annapolis, should win the nomination in a walk.

And a bit about the competition: Jon Cardin missed nearly 75% of committee votes in Annapolis

"Particularly in the House of Delegates, committees are where the real work is done," said David Lublin, an American University government professor. "I can see the campaign ads now: 'He's not doing his job, and now he wants a bigger one.'"

Jon Cardin vs. Brian Frosh

[B' Spokes: While not directly bike related (though Brian Frosh is a cyclist), I will assert that Brian Frosh is one reason why our bike bills will typically pass the Senate while the House can have issues with them, that point is better expressed below in more general terms. And maybe there is some parallels to cycling like supporting the underdog that's may lose to a big name.]

The efforts of the candidates for Attorney General present a somewhat different picture. In light of Delegate Aisha Braveboy’s minimalist campaign, with little money raised, evaluating her efforts during the General Assembly isn’t particularly relevant even with her active role in the Legislative Black Caucus.

A second candidate, Delegate Jon Cardin, through a strategy of continuous press releases, tried to claim credit for bills on which he had little impact and made pronouncements on many other issues. One of the most curious of those press releases was a joint one with Delegate Luiz Simmons calling on the Senate to act on their “Revenge Porn Bill.” Given that Simmons is one of the least well-regarded members of the House of Delegates, it is puzzling that Cardin wanted to associate with him so publicly.

The candidate for Attorney General whose work in the General Assembly session was significant and substantive was Senator Brian Frosh, chair of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

The most important bill was one that changed the burden of proof for individuals seeking protective custody orders. This legislation, which had died in previous years in the House, was a top priority of victims’ rights and women’s groups and was incorporated into the Administration’s legislative package. Frosh, however, was the real leader on the effort.

Another Frosh bill on domestic violence that passed this session closed a legal gap in the time frame between temporary and permanent protective orders. A third outlawed a particularly disgusting practice known as “Rape by Proxy” that previously was not covered by any statute. The term refers to a person using social media to pose as an ex-spouse and invite others to engage in sex with her or him.

At the request of the Maryland State’s Attorneys Association, Frosh managed to correct a legal defect in current law that sets the statute of limitations on felonies committed with a handgun at one year. The new law makes the time frame for prosecution of the use of a handgun in a felony the same as for the felony itself.

In reviewing the results of the session, I also found an interesting historical footnote. In 1861, Maryland was one of three states which ratified a proposed Constitutional Amendment that would have prevented Congress from overriding any state law on slavery. Maryland’s ratification of that law was repealed by SJ 1, sponsored by Frosh.

Will yet another session of leadership in the Senate be helpful to Frosh’s campaign to be elected Maryland’s Attorney General? Or will having an opponent with a famous last name be too much to overcome?

Bike safety advocates push 2 bills, get frosty reception in Maryland General Assembly

[B' Spokes: This is way we need to connect with those that represent us.]
*******************************************************************************
By Ashley Halsey III, Washington Post

...
“I’m a little shell-shocked that there are so many bike bills,” said Del. James E. Malone Jr. (D-Baltimore-Howard counties), who chaired the hearing before the House Environmental Matters Committee. “This year it’s four feet, and next year it’s five feet, and before you know it the cars are on the shoulders and the bikes are on the road.”

Malone said many cyclists he observes “don’t pay any attention to the rules of the road.” [Is he including us not riding far right as possible on a lane too narrow to share as State highways asserted? Confusion over what the rules are for cyclists and signaling out cyclists as the sole source scofflaw behavior on our roads are a big problem here.]
