An idea for bicycle planning

[B' Spokes: I just love it when I get an unsolicited email from one of our elected reps about cycling. And this wonderful idea comes from Howard County Councilman Greg Fox (District 5). And I agree this would be a nice idea for areas trying to develop bicycling routes like Howard County. The following is the email I received:]

Traffic calming sought outside Westchester Elementary School

...Vahlsing, who estimated that motorists often exceed the 25 mph speed limit on Old Frederick Road.

&quot;There's no reduce speed signs, no flashing lights,&quot; Vahlsing said. &quot;There's not even a crosswalk there, nothing to suggest to a driver passing by the school that there's a reason to slow down.&quot;

Vahlsing has also complained persistently to County Councilman Tom Quirk, whose 1st District includes the Catonsville area.

&quot;My goal is not to be snarky or confrontational, but when it comes to public safety, moreover the safety of grandparents and children, I am not one to stand still and hope things get done,&quot; he said in an Oct. 2 email to Quirk's aide, Catherine Engers.

Quirk said he has scheduled a meeting with Vahlsing and county transportation engineers and public works officials to discuss possible solutions, including traffic-calming measures on Old Frederick Road at Devere Lane.

Vahlsing said he would like to see speed humps, but Engers told Vahlsing in a Sept. 13 email that Old Frederick Road is designated as a collector road and isn't eligible for speed humps.

B' Spokes: There is something wrong if non-arterial roads in front of schools cannot get effective traffic calming measures. More to the point, speed humps and speed tables are often confused in the vernacular and a speed table would be appropriate here and more effective then other traffic calming measures IMHO.

Man hurt in bicycle accident

Capital Gazette

A 53-year-old man was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after he fell off a bicycle Saturday afternoon.
Lt. Cliff Kooser, a spokesman for the county fire department, said the accident happened around 2 p.m. at Crain Highway and 5th Avenue SE in Glen Burnie.
The man suffered injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.

5th Annual Bicycling Advocates Bike HoCo Ride -- Sunday October 14

5th ANNUAL BIKE HOCO RIDE
(Formerly the BAHC All-Club Ride)
Hosted by: Bicycling Advocates of Howard County (BAHC), APL Cycling Club, Glenelg Gang, Ho Co Cyclists, and the Mid Maryland Triathlon Club

It’s that time again to join other Howard County cyclists and enjoy a GREAT Fallride and social. This is the fifth year that BAHC has organized this ride. Last year over 120 Howard County riders participated.

Date &amp; Time: SUNDAY, October 14, 2012

· Check-in/Registration begins at 8:30am

· Rides start at 9:00am sharp!

Location: The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

· Start/Check-in: APL Softball Field Parking Lot

· Post-Ride Social: APL Picnic Pavilion

· Navigation/Google maps location: Across from 7150 Sanner Road, Clarksville, MD

General Information:

* We will have 63/45/34/26 mile routes. BAHC has cue sheets and GPS data file on its web site: <a href="http://bikehoco.org/cue-sheets/">http://bikehoco.org/cue-sheets/</a>;(paper copies will be available at check-in).

· Sign in 8:30 am (ALL riders need to sign waiver to participate) -- staggered ride start at 9am (faster Metric riders first and slower 26 mile riders last).

· Princeton Sports will again provide SAG support.

· We areplanning a rest stop for the longer rides at the Glenwood Community Center on Rt 97 (MMTC is hosting) with the metric stopping there twice and the 45 mile route stopping there once.

* All riders are invited to participate in a post-ride social at the APL Picnic Pavilion (on the other end of softball ball field from the parking area) after the ride. BAHC will set up grills and supply water/Gatorade and snacks. All Clubs and individuals are welcome to bring their own picnic supplies (use the grills) and drinks. Bring your own beer and some to share (especially if it is a good micro brew). Beer/ alcohol may only be consumed in the picnic pavilion area not in the parking lot.
* We will need volunteers are need help run check-in and prep/clean up the picnic area.

Donation:

· BAHC is a §501(c)4 tax-exempt organization. We are requesting a minimum donation of $5 a rider to help fund our efforts as advocates for the cyclists of Howard County. This is our only 2012 fundraiser.

COUNCIL HEARING ON WESTERN PLAN SCHEDULED
__________________________________________________

The Baltimore County County Council has scheduled a public hearing on the Western Baltimore County Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Plan:

Monday, October 15, 2012 following the Council meeting which begins at 6 p.m. (Speaker registration is held between 5:30 to 6:00 p.m.)

Towson, MD 21204

If adopted by the County Council, the plan will become an amendment to the County master plan. Expressions of support for the plan will aid in the plan's adoption and future implementation. Please attend the public hearing to voice your opinion.

The Western Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Plan was reviewed and approved by the Planning Board on April 19, 2012. It can be viewed at <a href="http://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/westbikeped">http://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/westbikeped</a>;.

The recommendations for bicycle improvements can also be viewed on an interactive map at <a href="http://myneighborhood.baltimorecountymd.gov">http://myneighborhood.baltimorecountymd.gov</a>; by selecting the Bicycle Facilities tab to the right. The map depicts the recommendations of both the Eastern and Western Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Plans. The Eastern Plan was approved by the Baltimore County Council in 2006.

Man Falls From Bicycle, Hit By Car, Dies

Baltimore County Police say a 27-year-old man died after he was hit by a car, minutes after he fell off a bicycle.

The accident took place just after 3:30 Saturday morning at the intersection of Fuselage Avenue and Right Wing Drive in Essex.

Police say Jason Leonard of Joppa had been riding his bicycle on Right Wing Drive, when he fell and then was hit by a car at the intersection.

The driver of the car, 25-year-old Brandon Cook of Essex remained at the scene.

Cook was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Police are still investigating.

Howard County Bicycle Master Plan -- First Citizen Workshop Saturday

The first citizen workshop meeting for development of the first Howard County Bicycle Master Plan is this Saturday morning:
Workshop 1 – September 22, 2012 (Miller Branch Library; 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.)

Workshop 2 – October 3, 2012 (East Columbia Branch Library; 6:00 p.m.-8:45 p.m.)
Workshop 3 – October 24, 2012 (JHU – Applied Physics Lab, Building 1, Parsons Auditorium; 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)
Workshop 4 – November 7, 2012 (Glenwood Branch Library; 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.)
Workshop 5 – November 2012 (Elkridge area)
Workshop 6 – November 2012 (Savage/North Laurel area)

A survey and interactive map have been added to the county’s bike master plan website.
