Tom Quirk for Baltimore County Council 1st Council District

Walkable Communities

Necessary for the success of Smart Growth policies and the health and safety of our children is greater awareness of the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists.

Walkable communities mean

  • Safe streets for our children to walk to school or to the park
  • Decreased traffic congestion
  • Decreased emissions
  • Increased demand for local businesses
  • Improved public health

Tom chose to locate his office on Frederick Road just a mile from his home because he believes in walkable communities and vibrant local business corridors.

It's super important to know that my opponent:

1. Wants to cap commercial property tax assesments at 2%. This could cut local govt services OR increase OUR income tax or property taxes. I'm strongly against this idea. FYI: Homeowners/voters/taxpayers in Baltimore County have a 4% cap on property tax assesments.

2. My opponent wants to move the Urban Rural Demarcation Line. This would increase sprawl and destroy open space. It would also divert needed money away from older communities. I'm strongly against moving the URDL and think it would be disaster.

I'm a strong supporter of Smart Growth, protecting the URDL, and Neighbor Space. We need to continue to revitalize older suburban areas NOT destroy open space and continue sprawl.

Like most people I live a hectic life and who has the time for much exercise? Thanks to xtracycle now I do. By using my bike for daily activities I can get things done and get an hour plus work out in 15 minutes extra of my time, not a bad deal and beats taking the extra time going to the gym. In case you are still having trouble being motivated; the National Center of Disease Control says that inactivity is the #2 killer in the United States just behind smoking. ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/bb_nutrition/ ) Get out there and start living life! I can carry home a full shopping cart of groceries, car pool two kids or just get lost in the great outdoors camping for a week. Well I got go, another outing this weekend.
