Sunday Streets to pilot 25 October

The City of Baltimore is expected to issue its first permit for a Sunday Streets event in October 2009.

For several years Baltimore's planned "Sunday Streets" has been germinating. The first shoots appeared with the recent unveiling on onelesscar's proposed "Lake to lake" course, linking Lake Montibello with Druid Hill Park.

Now the Roland Park Civic League has secured a City permit to host a homegrown Sunday Streets event.

On 25 October, from 7AM to 1PM, vehicular traffic on Roland Avenue will be blocked from Northern Parkway south to Cold Spring Road. Cyclists, pedestrians, skaters and skateboarders will own the road. Scores of local volunteers will act as safety monitors, minimizing costs.

"We really need cyclists from all over Baltimore to stream into Roland Avenue that morning. The City is watching carefully. If we show a strong demand, a Citywide Sunday Streets could soon follow", remarked Phil Spevak, Roland Park Civic League President.

If successful, onelesscar and the Roland Park Civic League hope to combine forces and link the Roland Avenue and Lake-to-lake routes in a bigger Sunday Streets event in March 2010.
