Betraying the Planet

New York Times Op-Ed Columnist PAUL KRUGMAN
...
But if you watched the debate on Friday, you didn’t see people who’ve thought hard about a crucial issue, and are trying to do the right thing. What you saw, instead, were people who show no sign of being interested in the truth. They don’t like the political and policy implications of climate change, so they’ve decided not to believe in it — and they’ll grab any argument, no matter how disreputable, that feeds their denial.

Indeed, if there was a defining moment in Friday’s debate, it was the declaration by Representative Paul Broun of Georgia that climate change is nothing but a “hoax” that has been “perpetrated out of the scientific community.” I’d call this a crazy conspiracy theory, but doing so would actually be unfair to crazy conspiracy theorists. After all, to believe that global warming is a hoax you have to believe in a vast cabal consisting of thousands of scientists — a cabal so powerful that it has managed to create false records on everything from global temperatures to Arctic sea ice.

Yet Mr. Broun’s declaration was met with applause.

Given this contempt for hard science, I’m almost reluctant to mention the deniers’ dishonesty on matters economic. But in addition to rejecting climate science, the opponents of the climate bill made a point of misrepresenting the results of studies of the bill’s economic impact, which all suggest that the cost will be relatively low.

Still, is it fair to call climate denial a form of treason? Isn’t it politics as usual?

Yes, it is — and that’s why it’s unforgivable. ...

Like most people I live a hectic life and who has the time for much exercise? Thanks to xtracycle now I do. By using my bike for daily activities I can get things done and get an hour plus work out in 15 minutes extra of my time, not a bad deal and beats taking the extra time going to the gym. In case you are still having trouble being motivated; the National Center of Disease Control says that inactivity is the #2 killer in the United States just behind smoking. ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/bb_nutrition/ ) Get out there and start living life! I can carry home a full shopping cart of groceries, car pool two kids or just get lost in the great outdoors camping for a week. Well I got go, another outing this weekend.

I think you are being lead down the path of global governance. That is the whole point to the new religion of Global Warming or Climate Change or whatever the new term is next week. We are gonna be so taxed to hell by the Cap & Trade to the point of being on the brink of a third world country. Those people in the Congress don't work for you like you are told. No matter which party! I do not denial that there is global climate change. It changes all the time. It has been changing for billions of years. It will go on changing for better or worse long after you and I are gone. The hair-brained idea that WE little humans can alter it and make it "better" is an illusion. Many, many scientist have been funded by the same people who want this illusion to be perpetrated on the masses. Many, many scientist who do not get funded by the illusionist are able to tell the real tale of this myth and you can find them easily on google with the phrase, "global warming myth". The fact that they tend to be "righties" or Republicans does not mean they are wrong. The planet has been cooling since 1997...look it up. ...and I wonder if it got warmer wouldn't that be good for areas that now have a short growing season? So, why would Global Warming be bad? Don't quote Gore, either. His film is not allowed in the UK because of all the factual errors. Bikebreath
