T4 America Ready to Go List

One criteria that the traffic folks use to establish need is the dollar amount of non-funded projects. No projects, no need so no funding. Which for cyclists then means no projects because of no funds and the cycle repeats. So with a envious eye on what is happening not that far away (and hopping to get this kind of energy here) here is what's happening in the DC area:

To the area bike coordinators,

Please see the attached list of bike and ped projects that are being vetted for inclusion in the forthcoming economic stimulus package. We’ve been asked to identify which projects could be under contract by May, and which would be ready to go within two years. Can you please review the list and get back to me with that information. Sorry if this is a duplicative effort, but I think it’s worth everyone’s time. Also, at the bottom of this email is the list of projects that I submitted to Rails to Trail and T 4 America earlier this week. I included various trail widening/resurfacing projects that are needed mainly because they would require little planning and could be ready to go quickly. These projects, and others on my list, didn’t seem to make it on to the T 4 America list, but we’ll keep pushing.

Loudoun County Parkway Shared-Use Path (Loudoun County)
Build a 4.4 mile shared-use path parallel to Loudoun County Parkway from Route 7 to Waxpool Road. The Loudoun County Parkway is identified as a primary corridor in the Loudoun County Bicycle Plan. Loudoun County Office of Transportation staff selected the Loudoun County Parkway as the County’s top priority unfunded bicycle or pedestrian project. The estimated cost of this project is $1,000,000.

PG Connector Trail (Washington, DC and Prince George’s County, MD)
This is a trail that will connect the Metropolitan Branch Trail in DC with the Anacostia Tributary Trail network in Prince George’s County, MD. The trial will also provide a connection between two metro stations. The estimated cost of this project is $3,450,000.

Metro Bicycle Parking Project
This project replaces existing Type 3 racks with modern inverted U racks at all Metrorail stations. The Type 3’s are nearing the end of their useful lives, and are no longer manufactured. WMATA’s rack replacement plan, developed in June 2006, is still unfunded, however, a limited number of racks were purchased by WMATA’s Plant Maintenance Department. If additional funding became available Metro could complete rack replacement in the plan and allow for additional racks to be installed. This project also pilots a new bike locker system at 3 stations each year using a parking technology system modeled after car sharing. Funding assumes 20 lockers will be installed at 3 stations. The estimated cost of this project is $500,000.

Metropolitan Branch Trail (Montgomery County, MD)
This 7.7 mile multi-use path will run from Union Station to Silver Spring, parallel to the Red Line of the Metro. It will link to the planned Prince George’s Connector Trail at Fort Totten. On the Montgomery County side, the trail will eventually connect to the Georgetown Branch Trail at the Silver Spring Transit Center. The Montgomery County section of the trail includes a trail bridge over Georgia Avenue, and a trail tunnel beneath East West Highway. The estimated cost of this project is $3,900,000.

Anacostia Trail Connector (Washington, DC)
This project will link the extension of the Anacostia Trail in Prince George’s County, Maryland with new sections of the Anacostia near Benning Road in northeast DC. The project will cost approximately $1.6 million.

Mount Vernon Trail Extension (Arlington and Fairfax Counties, VA)
This project would extend the Mt. Vernon Trail from its current terminus at Rosslyn Circle north to the American Legion Bridge. The estimated cost of this project is $4,750,000.

Chambliss Connector Trail (Fairfax, VA)
This project is a trail bridge over Holmes Run to connect the Holmes Run Greenway trail with the Fairfax County Trail. The estimated cost of this project is $1,000,000.

Repair Projects: Trail Resurfacing and Signage Improvements

1) Sligo Creek Trail (Maryland). Estimated cost is $1.6 million.
2) Capital Crescent Trail Widening (Montgomery County, MD). This project would widen the Capital Crescent Trail from Bethesda to the DC line. The estimated cost of this project is $2,500,000.
3) Anacostia Tributaries Trail System (Prince George’s County, MD). This project would include the resurfacing and intersection crossing improvements for the Northeast and Northwest Branch Trails and the Paint Branch Trail. Estimated cost for this project would be $4.5 million.
4) Mt Vernon Trail Widening (Arlington and Alexandria, VA). This project would improve the highly congested Mt Vernon Trail from Rosslyn Circle to Alexandria through trail widening and resurfacing. The estimated cost of this project would be $4,500,000.
