Humane Metropolis Baltimore

A free public workshop sponsored by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy
Organized by the Ecological Cities Project in collaboration with the Parks & People Foundation

June 11, 2009, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Maryland Historical Society
201 W. Monument St.
Baltimore, MD 21201

Today, 80 percent of Americans live in cities and suburbs and more than half the world's population is now classified as "urban." Older cities and their suburbs like Baltimore City and County are experiencing many challenges - affordable housing, jobs, mobility, education, public health, physical fitness, floods, and ecological destruction - not to mention the current economic and foreclosure crisis.

"Humane Metropolis" is a new perspective on people, nature, and cities developed by the Ecological Cities Project in collaboration with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. The 2006 book The Humane Metropolis: People and Nature in the 21st-Century City highlights new initiatives for various cities to become more:

Green: Protect and restore urban biodiversity and ecological services

Healthy: Promote outdoor exercise and fitness, reduce respiratory threats

Safe: Reduce crime rates; lower risk of fire, floods, and other hazards

Efficient: Employ a better use of water, energy, materials (e.g., green building, light rail)

Equitable: Embrace environmental and social justice, affordable housing, access to jobs

Neighborly: Foster pride of place and sense of community

BRTB meeting highlights

Street Smart Campaign coming to Balto Metro area, planned to hit the streets in August. Modeled after what is happening in the DC Metro Area: http://www.mwcog.org/transportation/activities/planning/safety.asp;

Eastern Baltimore County Bicycle and Pedestrian Access Plan is being phased into upcoming construction projects. Initially this will create sort of a hopscotch of bike facilities but over time they should start to connect. This approach worked well in Philly so there is no reason why it should not work here as well. This approach makes the most economic sense and should be applauded for its practicality and do ability.

Western Baltimore County Bicycle and Pedestrian Access Plan has been given the OK to start to proceed.

Got A Bike? Engrave It - Lock It Or Lose It

Baltimore County Crime Prevention Tips for Homeowners during the Warm Weather Months:

Bike riding and warm weather are a natural combination. But if your bike is stolen, hiking will be more your speed over the next few months.

The Baltimore County Police Department suggests all bike owners engrave their bikes. It's very simple to do and if needed, owners can go to the local precinct and borrow an engraving tool. Officers say using the ID numbers from a driver's license or Maryland ID card is the best way to mark your bike. Never, Never use a social security number as an ID number.

Another suggestion from officers is when storing a bike in a shed or garage, lock and attach it to a lawnmower or other heavy and bulky equipment. Thieves do break into sheds and garages. Attaching a bike to a piece of heavy equipment makes it more difficult to just walk or ride away from the area.

For more information on how to safeguard your bike and other valuables in your home, garage or shed contact your precinct's Community Outreach Officer.

MAY IS CLEAN COMMUTE MONTH
Gear Up and Get Ready!

http://www.CleanCommuteMonth.comEvery May the Baltimore Metropolitan Council and our Clean Commute Partners host Clean Commute Month to promote Clean Commuting.

What is Clean Commuting?

It's riding transit, bicycling, carpooling, walking, or teleworking. It's anything other than driving alone in a motor vehicle. Because motor vehicles contribute up to 30% of the emissions that dirty our air, people who choose to clean commute are making an individual choice that helps reduce air pollution.

For a few days in May, keep your car parked. Try another way to get around. It's not hard! You can take transit, bicycle, or even walk. If you do drive, share your ride with a friend or co-worker, and make sure to keep your car in tip-top condition. You could cut your commute costs in half.

Find out more at one of these great events!

This year's activities will include Clean Car Clinics, a commuter appreciation day, Bike to Work Day, and tons of fun outreach events! Here are a few events:

 • May 1 & 2 - Baltimore Flowermart
 • May 2 & 3 - Towsontown Festival
 • May 9 - Carroll County Herb Festival (Piney Run Park)
 • May 15 - Bike to Work Day
 • May 17 - Baltimore Bike Jam (Patterson Park)
 • May 19 - Commuter Thank-you (Aberdeen MARC)
 • May 28 - Harford County Clean Car Clinic

Welcome Stephanie Yanovitz!

ONE LESS CAR BIKE SYMPOSIUM A SUCCESS!
Details about the symposium on new web site

The 12th Annual Bike Symposium in Annapolis on February 4th was a huge success!
Although the weather caused school closings in many jurisdictions approximately 500 people attended. Additionally, there were twenty exhibitors displaying projects and engaging the audience. The high attendance indicates that people care deeply about promoting bicycling as a means of alternative transportation. As our population grows it is critical that a safe infrastructure, along with laws protecting bicyclists, are intact.

CHOOSE SAFETY FOR LIFE!
Regional campaign offers great info on bicycle and pedestrian safety

Bike and Ped SafetyNearly 3,000 pedestrians are injured annually, more than one-third of which occur in Baltimore City and more than another one-third of which occur in Baltimore, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties. Whether we're traveling on four wheels or 16; two feet or two wheels, we all have something in common: we are on this road together. Sadly, the toll of sharing the road together has cost too much, and lost lives is a price too dear for just getting from here to there. Visit the link below to get some helpful rules of the road whether you're walking, bicycling - or driving around pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles or large trucks. The good news is that you're in control and have a choice - to choose safety for life!

 Town Hall Meeting on Biking

Thursday, April 30th, 7:00 PM

Annapolis City Council Chambers
160 Duke of Gloucester Street

Dear Friend,
This Thursday we will hold a Town Hall Meeting in City Council Chambers. We'll be looking at ways of making Annapolis a more bike friendly city. Our guest speaker will be Jane Shey.

A native of Algona, Iowa, Jane moved to Annapolis in 1988. She has worked in Washington, DC, for twenty years on agriculture and international trade issues for a Member of Congress. She recently completed a Masters in European Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. She is currently enrolled in that school's PhD. program with a focus on environmental policy and splits her time between Annapolis and Europe.

Jane is an avid bicyclist and proponent of bike friendly cities. Her PowerPoint presentation on the subject is informative and challenging. You won't want to miss this incredible presentation!
A bike-friendly city will reduce the number of cars circulating through our city, improve our air quality, increase property values, and enhance our overall quality of life.

Plan to join us in City Council Chambers this Thursday at 7:00 pm.

Celebrating the Victims of Crime Act

[Baltimore Spokes: Many cyclists have experienced the near equivalent of someone with a baseball bat approaching and saying "We don't like your kind here. " But somehow replace a baseball bat with a car and it no longer becomes a crime, this has to change! Maybe we have an opportunity at this seminar to help make that change. For 2006 Baltimore County had 68 traffic fatalities, 15 of those were pedestrians. 414 pedestrians and 91 cyclists were injured in traffic crashes. Kids are over represented in bike and pedestrian crashes, is this really the kind of environment we want?]

Catonsville Chamber of Commerce Hosts Seminar
This Year’s Subject is “Celebrating the Victims of Crime Act”

Baltimore County, Md. (April 10, 2009) - On Tuesday, April 28, the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce will host a seminar on the Victims of Crime Act. The seminar will also address the problems associated with gangs and related crimes.

The second annual Victim’s Rights Summit will take place at CCBC-Catonsville, in the Q Building Theater beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. This important event coincides with “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week” which will take place April 26 through May 2, throughout the County and the country.

Local businesses and community groups, educational institutions and the Baltimore County Police Department have collaborated to present this year’s seminar. Law enforcement commanders from neighboring agencies and as many as 300 guests are also expected to attend this summit.

The scheduled speakers for the evening are:

* Madeline Herrington, Administrator for the Office of the Inspector General, Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, as the Keynote Speaker;
* Robin Woolford, Executive Director of the Maryland Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and an advocate for victims’ rights;
* Scott D. Shellenberger, Baltimore County State’s Attorney;
* Captain John Spiroff, commanding officer of Precinct 1/Wilkens, as the moderater of the seminar; and
* Community Outreach Officers Mike Darcey and Bill Rubie will also be available to discuss Gangs and Related Crimes as it affects the community.

Joining the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce in hosting this event will be the Baltimore County Police Department-Precinct 1/Wilkens, CCBC Foundation-Catonsville, CCBC School of Justice, Arbutus Business and Professional Association, Lansdowne Business and Professional Association, St. Agnes Foundation, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and the Wilkens Police and Community Relations Organization.
