Monumental City by Bike: A Memorial Day Weekend Ride

Via Baltimore Heritage

May 25 @ 9:00 am $10

From “Decoration Day” events in the 1860′s honoring Civil War soldiers to a transformation into a national holiday, Memorial Day is a time to learn about and reflect on those who have died serving our country. Baltimore’s abundance of monuments and public memorials offer a great opportunity to do just this.

Early on, our city gained a reputation for its remarkable monuments. The famous nickname, the Monumental City, comes from a 1827 toast by John Quincy Adams on a visit to Baltimore:

“Baltimore, the Monumental City: may the days of her safety be as prosperous and happy as the days of her danger have been trying and triumphant!”

The city’s reputation as the Monumental City has only grown as residents have erected hundreds of memorials in the intervening 190 years. We invite you to join Baltimore Heritage tour guide Dr. Ralph Brown this Memorial Day weekend to learn about the city’s monumental sculpture in our annual Baltimore by Bike tour.

Monumental City by Bike is free for veterans, currently enlisted military personnel and their families.

Sprunging Spring to Annapolis And Back Trail Ride

Via Facebook:

Haven't cycled more than 25 miles all winter? Need to work out the cobwebs in your legs? Training for Ride for the Feast, or some other century in early May, and would like to get in a 50 mile training ride a month prior without dealing with traffic? We'll be riding a complete loop of the the BWI & B&A trails, with lunch in downtown Annapolis. We'll be taking the Light Rail to the Linthicum Light Rail Stop, at BWI trailhead, for an approximately 9:00 am departure (from Linthicum. Probably catching the 8:23 train from UB/Mt Royal. Or you can park by Lindale Middle School, which is right next to the trailhead). Exact time and meetup plans to be determined later. This will be at a ~12-13 mph leisurely pace; because a lot of us will be riding lower geared tour bikes and such, and WE'RE NOT IN A HURRY. All invited!

*** Update ***

Hey all! Hopefully this will be the only significant update. The weather prediction for Saturday looks great, with mostly sunny skies, highs of about 60, and 13 mph winds.
First, to those driving. I'm presuming there will be ample parking available at Lindale Middle School, at 415 Andover Rd. The Light Rail riders will likely be passing right by you at about 9:15, so it's probably best to just wait at the corner of Andover and S Hammonds Ferry Rd for us.

To those riding the light rail. I'm catching the train that stops at University of Baltimore/Mt. Royal at 8:23 am. That should get into the Linthicum light rail stop at just about 8:55 am. My plan is for us to congregate at the light rail stop and wait for the next train to arrive, for any stragglers, or if there are too many bikes on the previous train (if a train driver is a jerk about all the bikes and doesn't let us all on. It looks like we could be a big crowd - you may want to consider driving if that's an option available to you). Bikes are allowed on the light rail, but are required to stay at the back of the train cars (that does not necessarily mean the very last car. It means in the back of the second car of articulated pairs). That train should pull into Linthicum at about 9:10 am. Once any riders on the second train are ready we will be taking off.

*IMPORTANT NOTE* There are 2 Linthicum light rail stops. We are unboarding at the second one. *DO NOT* unboard at North Linthicum. That's the wrong one.

Ride to remember: Nathan Krasnopoler - Update, date change

UPDATE: *** Now Wednesday February 27, 2013 7:00PM. BRING LIGHTS ***.

The Broadview 116 W. University Pkwy, Baltimore, MD

This will be a short memorial ride for one of our own. We will adjust details about the ride as the date approaches. Please keep checking back. Comments are welcome.

Two years ago we lost JHU engineering student Nathan Krasnopoler in a tragic bicycle accident. He was biking in a bike lane with all the proper cycling gear right across from his university when an elderly driver hit him. His parents continue to fight for meaning in his death, and for the rest of us as well. The Krasnopolers are launching an organization, Americans for Older Driver Safety, to help prevent this tragedy from happening again. Let's show our support, both for Nathan and his family's initiative by doing what we do best...riding together.

Here are articles regarding the accident:

Midweek Bike Sweats at Montebello

Wednesday, January 23, 2013 6:45 PM

Lake Montebello Curran Drive, Baltimore , MD

This week we'll be working on hard, fast efforts around Lake Montebello. There is a simple and effective plan for this workout, but there are a couple rules to follow to make it work. We will explain what needs to happen 10 minutes before the start.

What you need to know:
• We’ll start rolling at 7PM. Be at the south parking lot at 6:50PM
• It’s dark. Have decent lighting.
• You can participate with any bike, BUT you’ll have more fun on a road-style bike.
• You will need good reflexes on this ride. Let's save the boozing for afterwards.
