Baltimore man sentenced for running over bicyclist in stolen car

A Baltimore man will spend more than 30 years in prison for running over a bicyclist in a stolen car.

29-year-old Keon Stokes was sentenced Tuesday to 36 years.

Last month, he was convicted on several charges, including murder.

In the summer of 2005, prosecutors say Stokes stole a car, then hit and killed 20-year-old Kurt Flup.

Police say Stokes took off and later set the car on fire.

Velocipede will be closed from 8/13-8/18 and then Shop Organizing!!!

Hello Bicycle friends!!!

We at velocipede have been having a very busy summer, giving away and selling hundreds of bikes, teaching classes, and helping people to fix their own bike. So as the heat is bearing down on us we have decided to take a much needed break before students come back into town in order to take stock, do some inventory and rest.

So, Shop will be closed from Monday August 13th until Saturday August 18th. On Sunday the 19th of August instead of the normal sunday shop, we will have a Shop Organizing Day from 12:00-6:30.

During this Shop Organizing Day we will work on making more work areas in the shop, as well generally organizing the rest of the shop. We need as many people as possible, of all skill levels, to make this day a success. This is a great time to rack up hours to be put towards co-op membership and parts, as well as helping Velocipede to continue to pump bikes and bike knowledge in to the city!!! (plus vegan and non-vegan food will be provided for the workers)

Also, we are working on re-assessing our current policies on co-op membership and bike claiming-- we would like to hear your opinions and impressions of how the shop works currently, and any advice or ideas of how it could work better. Please send emails to info@velocipedebikeproject.org with your comments and ideas.

Thank you all for time and for helping to make Baltimore more bike friendly. We will be sending out more reminders and requests soon!! Also remember that you can always keep abreast of events at Velocipede by checking our calendar at www.velocipedebikeproject.org/calendar;

Sheila Dixon - For Mayor

The goal of Baltimore Spokes is to be a public resource on bicycling issues wherever they may fall. I can only do so much and it is my fault that I have not found the time to cover the other candidates

May we have some more?

The Oregonian
When Portland unveiled, with great fanfare, the Eastbank Esplanade in 2001, we took the opportunity to comment upon its cost: $419 per inch. Our prose ranged from the snide to the snarky, tones, if we may say so ourselves, in which we are rather well-versed.

Now, as the city gears up to spend yet another small fortune on yet another of these touchy-feely trails -- this time along Sullivan's Gulch -- we'd like to revisit the issue and restate our position.

We were wrong.

With a nod to Oliver Twist, we'd even like to add this: "Please, sir, may we have some more?"
...
That $419-per-inch investment -- more than $30 million -- that we made on the Eastbank Esplanade was the catalyst for much of the redevelopment of Portland's inner east side. The next series of trails promises similar jolts of economic energy to neighborhoods too long left feeling disconnected from the city's core. Amsterdam spends about $36 per citizen a year on its bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure. Portland spends about $2 a person, per year. We have, in other words, only just begun.

Adopt a bike program

I am putting out a call to folks who might be interested in helping us "tune up" some of the bicycles we received from the Police Department this week as replacements for those that were stolen last week. Velocipede has agreed to host a work time so that we can use their tools. I am also suggesting that some of you might want to take a bike home with you and work on it on your own time. 30 bikes were stolen and right now we have about 14 working bikes. We had a line of folks last Wednesday evening waiting to ride.

Please let me know if anyone is interested either in meeting at Velocipede (on Lanvale near the Charles Theater) or taking a bike home. And, please send this out to anyone not on this list who might be interested.

Students can use this as community service hours.

Thanks
Anne
