Bicycle Racks on MTA Buses Fact Sheet

Background

In 2003 MTA purchased and installed 200 front-end bicycle racks on buses stationed at the Northwest Division Bus Yard in Baltimore City. The racks were purchased through federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds. The cost of these racks was roughly 200,000 dollars.

Due to a lack of proper training for MTA bus operators and maintenance personnel all of the racks have been damaged or destroyed. As of July 2007, no buses in the MTA system currently operate with bicycle racks.

During a meeting with One Less Car and the Transit Riders Action Council of Metropolitan Baltimore MTA Administrator Paul Wiedefeld said that he was committed to seeing that all buses have bike racks in the future. However, MTA has yet to commit to a timeframe or funding plan for purchasing and installing bicycle racks.

It is important to note that the bike racks currently installed on WMATA buses in the Washington DC area were paid for in part by a 600,000-dollar grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation in 2004. As on July 2007, all WMATA metrobuses were equipped with front-end bicycle racks. Although statistics are not yet available, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association states that the racks have been a success with bicyclists and transit riders. Transit ridership on the WMATA system has increased since the installation of the racks.

Most major mass transit systems in the United States, including the systems serving Philadelphia, Seattle, Chicago, Annapolis, Montgomery County, Maryland, Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Virginia Beach operate all or a significant majority of their buses with functioning bicycle racks.

How I lost 100 pounds

Wade Wingler lost 100 pounds through diet and exercise. What impressed me was how quickly he went from 15 miles to 50 miles and then a 100 miles on his bike. One key element... cycling is fun! Few forms of exercise are as motivating (fun) and practical (you can actually go to useful places) as cycling.

"At this point, I ride almost every day and I average between 100 and 150 miles per week. I recently told my dad that I'd rather be riding my bike than sitting in a recliner watching TV. It's the first time in my life that I've found a sport that I really enjoy and I'm pretty good at too."

Saturday Morning Road Bike Ride

Bike Doctor of Linthicum has extended an open-invitation Saturday Morning road bike ride since 1998. The ride takes place year round, and it is rarely cancelled for weather.

The route has remained the same for the last four years so riders can "pick-up" the group if they miss the official start. Signed liability waivers are required to participate, as well as a safety check on your bike and a helmet on your head!

The ride begins @ 8:00-8:15 AM from the store and travels approximately 30 miles. The route starts clockwise around the Thurgood G. Marshall - BWI Airport on the BWI Trail and then traverses the backroads of Linthicum, Hanover, Elkridge and Severn.

We finish at the store around 10:00 AM and enjoy Jittery Joe's coffee and goodies that riders bring in. Typically the pace is from 16-19 mph, and there is a rest stop @ 20 miles. There are several places to shorten the ride if the need arises.

Happy Velociween!!

Happy Velociween!!

That's the holiday that ensues when Halloween, and Velocipede open shop happen to fall on the same day!!! We at Velocipede feel that we cannot let such a happy coincidence pass without taking advantage, so....

On Wednesday night(halloween) we will be having open shop at normal times starting at 6, but we are encouraging those attending to spend that time decorating their bike to match their costume, and then at 8:30 we will go on a ride around town to show off our costumed bicycles(and selves) ending at 2640 St Paul St. where there will be a dance party and benefit for Ladyfest Baltimore. Vegan treats, DJ + good cause = fun!!!!

If you are working on a bike that you need to get done ASAP, don't worry, you can still do that on Wednesday, and someone will be there until 10 so you can work, but isn't riding a decorated bike so much more fun than working on a normal one?

(We will bring some stuff for bike costuming, but people are encouraged to bring more, as well as lights, and helmets!!!! Safety first please!!!!!)

Hope to see you there!!!!

The Road That Has No End

We are Tim and Cindie Travis, an ordinary American couple who decide to live out our dreams. We saved our money, quit our jobs, sold our possessions, and set off to travel around the world by bicycle. We left our home in Arizona, USA on March 2002 and have been on the road ever since. We have no plans to stop. This web site contains our ongoing travel blog, short videos and photo journal. We update our web site regularly, on location.
