TOUR DE GREATER HOMEWOOD TO HONOR FALLEN CYCLIST

Come celebrate Greater Homewood and cycling in Baltimore and pay tribute to the late Jack Yates.

Meet at the University of Baltimore's Gordon Plaza (corner of Maryland and Mount Royal) for some remarks from important cyclists! Meet some of Jack Yates' family! Get an awesome spoke card!

There will be two tour routes. The first is a 15 mile Tour de Greater Homewood, featuring a leisurely ride through tree-lined avenues, main streets, the Jones Falls Trail and more. The second route will be a shorter, family-friendly ride around Central Baltimore, an area of revitalization and arts activity the whole City can be proud of.

There is a suggested donation of $10. Funds will go to the juvenile justice programs that Jack Yates was passionate about.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, November 8th, at 1pm for the Tour du/de Greater Homewood, being held this year as a memorial to Mr. Jack Yates, who was their board member and friend. Mr. Yates’ family will be joining us.

TiVo the Ravens game this Sunday and gear up for north central Baltimore’s biggest bike tour – Tour de Greater Homewood! Organized by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC), the tour will honor fallen cyclist John R. Yates, who died in a hit-and-run accident at Maryland and Lafayette Avenues in August.

The ride will begin at 1:00 p.m. at University of Baltimore’s Gordon Plaza (Maryland and Mt. Royal Avenues) on Sunday, November 8th. A suggested donation of $10 for ride participants will benefit GHCC’s youth programs, of which Jack was a tireless advocate. For more details about the tour, including route information visit http://www.greaterhomewood.org;.

“Jack’s death in a cycling accident [was] a tragic loss for all citizens of Baltimore,” said Randy Knepper, former GHCC Board president. Jack first joined GHCC’s Board of Directors in March 2004, where he served as Secretary. Jack also worked as an Educational Consultant at the Abell Foundation, and later served as a mentor for Lake Clifton High School’s Educational Opportunities Program (EOP), where he counseled graduates of the Baraka School (featured in the critically acclaimed Boys of Baraka). During his tenure from 2001-2008, Jack helped nearly all 89 Baraka alumni graduate from high school.

Established in 1969, Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) helps neighborhoods in north central Baltimore City to become safer, better places to live. We serve 48 neighborhoods with a combined total of approximately 70,000 residents – nearly 10% of Baltimore City’s population. Our geographic boundaries stretch from the county line in the north to Mt. Royal Avenue in the south, and from the Jones Falls River in the west to Lake Montebello in the east.

GHCC carries out its mission to strengthen neighborhoods through improving educational opportunities, constructively engaging youth, building a new sense of community, and promoting positive economic development.

Like most people I live a hectic life and who has the time for much exercise? Thanks to xtracycle now I do. By using my bike for daily activities I can get things done and get an hour plus work out in 15 minutes extra of my time, not a bad deal and beats taking the extra time going to the gym. In case you are still having trouble being motivated; the National Center of Disease Control says that inactivity is the #2 killer in the United States just behind smoking. ( http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/bb_nutrition/ ) Get out there and start living life! I can carry home a full shopping cart of groceries, car pool two kids or just get lost in the great outdoors camping for a week. Well I got go, another outing this weekend.
